All in a Day's Work

Here are some stories of day-to-day life in the Shelter

Tyler & Damon

Damon the catThe shelter received a call reporting that two cats had been abandoned in an upper villa. The owner had been away for over a week. A neighbour was getting a little worried about them. Tyler the cat We went to the address to investigate and it quickly became obvious to us that the cats had been abandoned & neglected. We removed them & took them to the vet's, where they were flead, wormed & neutered. They were very timid but that was to be expected. Their confidence has grown and they settled in well. These handsome chaps have now found their forever home with a loving family.

Diva

Diva the catA lady arrived at the shelter in May, saying a cat that she thought was pregnant had appeared at her house. We gave the lady a basket & asked her to bring the cat to us. By the time she brought her back to the shelter, the cat had had a kitten and, before the staff could get her into a quiet room, she had another one. After an hour she had another two. Mum cat, who we called Diva, and her four kittens settled well into the fosterer's home. Whe the kittens were old enough they were brought to the shelter and were all homed very quickly. Diva has now found her forever home where she can happily have all the attention to herself and no longer has to worry about looking after any more kittens.

Flash

Mum cat Flash and her kittensOne of our Wardens received a phone call from a rather concerned lady who had been looking after a stray cat. She thought she had been overfeeding her, as the cat was getting very fat, and eventually she came inside and onto the lady's bed. She was bleeding, so the lady was concerned that she was ill. Nicky, our warden, suspected the cat was pregnant, and got to the house to find the cat giving birth! Nicky brought the cat to a pen in our Shelter where, with Wendy, the other warden, acting as midwife, the tired 6 month old cat, now named Flash, gave birth to 4 healthy kittens. The photo shows them at 3 days old, with their loving and capable 'teenage mum'. The good news is that Flash, once her kittens were weaned, was adopted by the lady who found her. And the kittens very quickly found good homes too.
