All in a Day's Work
The Scrunchy Gang
A mum cat and her five completely black kittens came into LCR care. The mum cat was extremely stressed and rejected the kittens, so it was decided that she should be spayed and returned to her farm situation. The five kittens were full of worms and fleas and there was a big difference in their weights. Before any treatment could begin, their foster mum had to figure out which kitten was which and so they were allocated coloured scrunchies. They all looked very smart with Miss Pink looking very cute and Mr Red looking slightly bemused. Mr Blue and Mr Purple managed to remove their scrunchies at least ten times a day! Mr Black did not have to wear a scrunchy as he was twice the size of the others. The kittens thrived and have all been adopted by lovely families.
Sally, Rosie and Flora
A lady phoned the Shelter to say that she had seen an adult cat and two very tiny kittens going about the gardens at the back of her house. The kittens were quickly trapped and taken to a fosterer but mum cat proved slightly more difficult and we thought the kittens might have to be bottle fed. However, mum was finally caught and reunited with her kittens. She was very frightened but soon settled when she realised she and her kittens were safe. When old enough, Rosie and Flora went off to a perfect home where they have taken over completely and, some weeks later, mum cat Sally was homed directly from her foster home to a lovely family.
Phoenix ... Black as Night!
Phoenix came into LCR care in early September having been found as a heavily pregnant stray in the Grangemouth area. She was not in the best of condition, having an open sore at the top of her tail. She arrived at her fosterers at teatime and gave birth to her two beautiful kittens the next morning. Right from the outset it was apparent that she was going to be in charge, not only of her kittens, but also of anyone who came near. When her fosterers brought her food, changed her water or cleaned out her tray she would charge out and box them round the legs, or worse! She was so protective of her kittens that simple tasks like worming and Front-Lining became like a military operation! Surprisingly the kittens were friendly, sweet and gentle and went to a very good home together where they have settled in very quickly. After her kittens were homed Phoenix was spayed (this wasn't the easiest operation the vet had ever done!). She gained weight and is now a stunning black cat with a lovely shiny coat. And the wonderful news is that, after a huge amount of input from her fosterers, she has now found a lovely family who will continue the good work started by them of encouraging her to trust people again.
