Despite rain on the Sunday, our stall at the Meadows Festival raised an amazing £572. Well done to our supporters for this achievement!

One of our volunteers opened her garden for Scotland's Garden Scheme in May and July. Altogether the two openings raised over £500 for LCR!
2009 was again a very busy year for LCR fosterers. The demand for foster places kept up at a steady pace from March right through until November, and a good number of fosterers had kittens in their care over Christmas.
In 2008 we had a great number of kittens coming in already weaned, and without their mothers and this in a way made placing them easier as one or two litters could be put into the same room where they had brilliant fun playing together. Last year however we had mainly mother cats and their litters or pregnant cats coming in and of course they have to have a room to themselves. Often fosterers had a mum with her kittens in one room and another set in a separate room just waiting to be moved to the "better suite" !! A bit like juggling.
We had the usual small number of kittens with health problems, and sadly one litter of week old kittens that didn't survive despite all our efforts. This is truly heartbreaking.
There is a lot of fun along the way as their characters develop and their antics are definitely more amusing than watching TV. It is hard and challenging work but very rewarding when a bunch of small, rather scruffy, flea-ridden kittens are turned into sleek and shiny, beautiful kittens. The mother cats too are a joy, very loving and just happy to have a safe haven for themselves and their kittens. We were also delighted to have a very good response to our new Mum Cats page from which we homed all our mums straight to their new owners.

New pens, constructed during last winter, are now open and fully functional.
They are already full, providing accommodation for the many cats who are looking for a new home.

New pens have been constructed here and they will be opening in the spring.
We held two extremely successful open days, when people came to enjoy tea & coffee with delicious home baking, shopping for bargains at the stalls and taking the opportunity to have a look round all the cat pens. A spectacular £3129 was raised (£1,154 in June and £1,975 in July). Well done to all the volunteers and supporters who helped to make these events go with such a swing!
Just three months on and what a different view from pen 6! New lambs in the fields and hopefully no more snow this year!

Winter arrived with a vengeance at Lothian Cat Rescue. Doesn't it look beautiful? But it brought so many problems. Fingers crossed we've had our allotted share of the snow for this year!

But the cats still need feeding and cleaning out regardless of the weather so WELL DONE to our intrepid staff who battle against the elements to care for the cats!
Amber, Pandora and Spooky, previously shown on our Featured Cats page have all found new loving homes. However there are always a few more....

All of these cats have had a really bad start in life and so need to go to an adult household with patient and experienced people. Could you find a place in your heart and your home for any of these cats? If you are interested in any of the cats please contact the Shelter on 01875 821025 for more information.

If you know of anyone who has an unneutered /unspayed cat, please try to encourage them to have their cat neutered or spayed and help to stop the flow of unwanted animals. If people feel they cannot afford to have their cats neutered or spayed, LCR has a neutering scheme and may be able to help.
Last yesr , especially in West Lothian, a very large number of cats were spayed or neutered. Hopefully we will see the benefits of all the neutering in the years ahead with fewer unwanted cats and kittens.
We are extremely short of staff for the shop. Our present staff do a wonderful job keeping the shop open but they are having to do a lot of extra hours to cover holidays and ill-health. Do you have a few hours a week spare to volunteer and keep our shop raising money for LCR? If you are interested please phone the shop on 0131 661 3411 and ask for Mrs Kean.
